Civil engineers carry the responsibility of designing mega construction projects, for example, bridges, dams, tunnels, airports, major roads and even high-rise buildings. Project management

Civil engineers are often in positions where they must evaluate and coordinate the work of others on a project and ensure they are in line with relevance laws, quality and regulations. They have the sole responsibility to approve all plans for construction projects. For engineers to achieve success and good reputation, they must accurately approximate materials, resources, costs and time needed for completion of various facets of a project.

Technical skills

Comprehensive skills in mathematics including statistics, calculus, trigonometry, geometry and algebra are essential for a civil engineer. These skills are primary as they enable the application of appropriate formulas and codes used for solving problems and designing. Also, civil engineers must be good in accounting, as many times they are required to interpret financial statements and other accounting documents.

Competence in physics, use of clear rules, soil science, environmental aspects and design are fundamental civil engineering. Also, architectural skills in designing, computer programs, models, drawings and blueprints are part of a civil engineer's job.

Communication skills

Putting in mind that civil engineers interact with a broad variety of professionals, their communication skills should be superb with all these people from diverse backgrounds. They must be active listeners to capture all significant details from other professionals, and they must be good at sharing their own details both in writing and orally, particularly when dealing with non-engineers.

Critical and creative thinking   

In many instances, civil engineers encounter severe problems and need to adequately assess the merits and demerits of each alternative solution in order to unearth the best approach to managing those problems. The skills they need to have include inductive and deductive reasoning, application of specific solutions to general problems and amalgamating several sets of information to form conclusions.

Leadership skills

A leadership role is bestowed upon civil engineers, as they are normally expected to supervise the entire project from the beginning to the end. They must give direction to teams of experts like architects, technicians, urban planners, construction managers and surveyors while maintaining the trust of appointing authorities. The leadership ability of a civil engineer can be a key factor in ensuring timely completion of a project within the budget.
